I'm Busy When I Have Nothing to Do
I keep forgetting to post. I feel like there's a lot to comment on, but my life is pretty uneventful. However, when there's not much going on in my life, my consumption of media seems to rise to near-epic levels.
Books: I just finished reading A Short History of Nearly Everything an excellent popular science history book (did a lot of my reading down at Dewey's cafe down at Shaker Square, a good excuse to get out of the house).
Podcasts: In addition to my usuals, I've been listening to the RU Sirius Show (don't know how I missed that for so long, since I discovered 10 Zen Monkeys a while ago). I've also been listening to the podcasted lectures for USC COMM 499, mainly because it's taught by Cory Doctorow.
Webcomics: I make a habit of reading the full archives so that my reading list doesn't grow too quickly. But, with free time, it continues to grow. The most notable addition is Kagerou (manga style, fantasy + psychodrama, probably PG-13 (but not gratuitously, IMO)). I'm a fan of stories with insane main characters, and the art and story are fantastic.
Blogs: My LJ reading list grows and shrinks. Currently, it's growing. Highlights are Burrito Blog(
burrito_blog) , Chipotlog (
chipotlog) , Eat Foo (
eat_foo) , and Stippy Japan (
stippy_japan) . Come to think of it, that's a surprisingly accurate reflection of what's been on my mind...
Games: I finished Kingdom Hearts II a while ago, but I'm far from full completion. However, that's probably too time consuming to be worth it. I just purchased Okami, which is excellent so far, and Red Faction, for the sake of variety.
Web: For highlights, read my del.icio.us bookmarks. Highlights of the highlights include this essay on really big numbers, a nifty tool for choosing color schemes, wedding dresses made of toilet paper, gory vegan propaganda (ultimately, it still makes me hungry...), an article on the mortgage crisis, strange cat videos, cyborg monkeys (for real!), mac and cheese, $1000 brownies, an anti-RIAA manifesto, the (new) hottest chili in the world, the Wheel of Lunch, and a free lunch for all (props to the Sikhs).
Music: Jonathan Coulton is awesome.
Webzines: If you're interested in electronic games, The Escapist is worth a look.
Radio: World Have Your Say is quite good. Yay NPR!
TV: Following Heroes and Jericho, watching season 2 of Battlestar Galactica. I've head some fans grumble that it goes downhill from there, but so far, so good...
Anime: Some Naruto (I always describe it as "cakey", but potato chips might be a better metaphor), Bartender (about a bartender without any superpowers whatsoever), Gunslinger Girl (it's a slice of life anime... about young brainwashed cyborg assassins), and Kaliedo Star (a school anime, where the school is a circus). I should also mention Welcome to the NHK! (existential drama + romantic comedy; about a hikikomori whose life takes a turn for the weird) as that was really good, although I finished that a while ago.
And I've still been working on programming and studying Japanese. Man, my mind is all over the place...
