The platforms can withstand the hurricane fairly well, it's all the refineries and storage facilities on the coast, and the major oil port of New Orleans, that's the problem. We're enjoying a nice 3.60/gal gas rate right now compliments of the DNC. Probably won't last...
Indeed, shut-in crude production is insignificant compared to city-destroying disasters. Given that we're already back at post-Katrina fuel prices, it's pretty obvious what will happen if New Orleans ends up under water again.
We're beyond post-Katrina prices here, even with the the DNC relief. Prices only shot up to $3/gal after Katrina hit. We're currently at $3.60-$3.70/gal now, so I'm predicting $4.50-$5 post-Gustav...
