Podcast Discussion

As I mentioned before, I've been listening to a lot of podcasts lately. Here's my current list:

EscapePod - Sci-fi "podcast magazine" and one of the best podcasts on the internet (if you like audio science fiction short stories, anyways). Went through all the back episodes, there were quite a few even back when I first discovered it.

Podcastle - Another podcast from that family, this one for fantasy. Also high quality.

clonepod - Basically a clone of Escape Pod, done by some kids. The intros and outros are rambley and a bit annoying (at least so far as I've seen, I'm working through back-episodes since there are only a few). Still, I want to see where they go with it, and the stories are great. In particular, they got some new Union Dues stories by Jeffrey DeRego (a favorite series I first encountered on EscapePod). Haven't heard all the back episodes, since there's just too much.

Cory Doctorow's Podcast - Cory Doctorow podcasts a lot of his short fiction in progress, and it's really good. Episodes of other podcasts in which Doctorow is interviewed are often pulled into the feed. Took quite a while to listen to the back-episodes.

C-Realm Podcast - The C stands for "consciousness". Philosophy, ramblings, and interviews by [livejournal.com profile] kmo. Calm and eclectic. Can get a bit new-agey for my taste, sometimes, but it's thought-provoking, interesting. Have not gone through the back episodes because it's far too much. Only went a few episodes back when I first added it.

Barack Obama's Podcast - Was very good (wish all legislators did something like this), but he hasn't posted anything for quite a while.

This Week in Tech - A panel-style talk show. Didn't bother with back-episodes, since it's current-events discussion and there's a lot of it.

I feel I haven't even scratched the surface with podcasts, though. There's so much good amateur and new professional material, and even some of the old radio players are archiving and podcasting their stuff now (NPR's doing that).

So, how about you? Do you listen to podcasts? What are your favorites?

I may check out the first two podcasts you posted. I don't normally listen to podcasts, though...

btw, love your moodtheme.

That'll be cool when it's done!

I do the C-Realm, too. He's got a professional interview style. Calm and informed.

Science Talk is probably the best of the podcasts supported by science magazines. The host actually sounds awake.

For skepticism, you can't go wrong with The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe. Those guys are hilarious and very well informed.

Robert Reich has a weekly podcast featuring his NPR pieces from Marketplace. Just a few minutes each week, and he knows his stuff.

Democracy Now! podcasts, but I find too much of it can turn you into an angry/depressed kinda person. Not much good news, though all of it true.

James Howard Kunstler is worth a listen at The KunstlerCast. His is a sardonic and biting wit.

My absolute fave: Radiolab. They do quite a few shows just for the podcast.

Other than that, one must always have one's snark: The Onion Radio News, recommended by my brother [livejournal.com profile] mcfnord.

Podcasts!

I listen to podcasts, My favorites are Word for Word from APM, Composer's Datebook also from APM, I used to love American Radio Works from APM but they stopped producing those (those were really well-done radio documentaries), I like Future Tense from APM (about technology), I like As it Happens (a CBC podcast). I used to subscribe to a classical guitar podcast from a guy named Jorge Rodriguez Carro (hope I spelled that right) but he no longer does that podcast, and I subscribed to a Jazz guitar podcast from a guy from San Francisco named Brian Kane: he also no longer does it, I also subscribed to a podcast of an eclectic mix of music from the dutch talent site Ongekend Talent, but I don't think any episodes are added anymore.

American RadioWorks was so much better than Radio Lab

It was. Radio Lab, in my opinion, is overly dramatic and treats you like you're stupid. American Radio Works documentaries, on the other hand, are done in a way that is a dozen times more professional.

On the contrary, one of my favorite podcast episodes is Where Am I? from RadioLab.
