Yet Another Pope Rant

Yesterday was Patriot's Day, which was fun. Yay freedom and three day weekends!

Less cheerful news is the election of Pope Benedict XVI (aka Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger or, inevitably, Pope Rat). The guy is known for being an unenthusiastic Hitler Youth, an apathetic Nazi soldier, a staunch fundamentalist and possibly the biggest homophobe in Catholic leadership. This will do nothing to quell the rise of dangerous fundamentalism that "leaves no room for Humanity, Reality, or the passage of time, except of course when it's inconvenient to mention stoning" ([livejournal.com profile] rpeate, here).

It's a real shame. I was hoping for reform. As a silver lining, the guy is 78 so his reign is likely to be short, and alienating people will not have a positive effect on the power of the church.

My friend here made a good point, though. Given how archconservative this papacy is likely to be, the next conclave may well be a (comparatively) liberal backlash from the third world.

El Papa was quoted as saying, "Some people think just because you want to stick to a strict interpretation of tradition that makes you a fundamentalist."
