Crazy day. Class from eight in the morning 'till after dark, with only an hour's break for lunch.
At any rate, despite some snags with enrollment, I'm probably going to be able to stay in "Six Books that Changed the World", which looks like it will be a lot of fun. The books are:
1. The Communist Manifesto
2. Uncle Tom's Cabin
3. The Origin of Species
4. The Prince
5. The Art of War and The Analects (I suppose this actually makes it seven books)
6. ?
Each student picks a sixth book to read as an individual project. There are plenty of places to look for ideas. Some pre-approved sixth book choices are Herodotus's Histories, Plato's The Republic, Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Politics, or Poetics, The Wealth of Nations, Noli Me Tangere, Civilization and its Discontents, and The Wretched of the Earth.
Currently, I think I'll go with Beyond Good and Evil, but I'd like to hear your opinion before I decide. What books do you think changed the world? Of those, which ones do I most need to read?
Edited: I originally copied some of those down from the wrong list. That has now been corrected.
