In My Life
Sep. 28th, 2008 09:05 pmWednesday: Finished getting Ubuntu setup on my work computer. So much nicer than my previous operating environment (FC3). Ubuntu is probably the most "accessible" type of Linux I've seen. Even with the fiddly bits of configuration required to get it to work with other ITA stuff, I didn't encounter any huge trouble. Also, Linux programmers should learn about chroot. Sufficiently clever use of chroot is great for creating a seperation between the environment you're developing in and the one you're developing for. (Important because the latter should be the same for all developers and the former probably shouldn't.)
Thursday: Went to a focus group for FitnessTogether run by Focus Pointe Global. Focus groups are interesting. Aside from being the type of marketing research where your feedback has the most direct effect, they give you food and pay you quite a bit to have you contribute your opinion. The session focused on the FitenessTogether brand (what does it mean, what are its "values", what extensions of business would be consistent with the brand), which makes sense. FitnessTogether is a franchise, so the corporation's product is their brand. I also thought it was interesting that "Ivory Soap" was used as the example in the "what is a brand" explanation, since that was the same example used in my social psych class.
Friday - Today: Was sick. Played Max Payne from start to end. Was overall a pretty good game, although frustrating in parts, and the game's mechanics contain a lot of good ideas that are poorly executed. However, whoever decided that the game should involve finicky, often instant-death jumping puzzles should be shot (OMG video games do cause violence; also, kidding). Some of the game's best scenes are the nightmare sequences, but these are marred by the inclusion of pointless but difficult jumping puzzles. Overall, it deserved its critical acclaim for its time, and was well worth the $3 I spent on a used copy.
