Recent Highlights That I Remember
Jun. 22nd, 2019 11:55 amI'm well again, but still exhausted.
Indie tabletop gaming group has started playing/playtesting Jenna Moran's Glitch, a Nobilis spinoff. In Nobilis, the protagonists are mortals empowered with dominion over various concepts (like "teatime", "socks", or "anticipation"). In Glitch, the protagonists are a subset of Nobilis antagonists, people who were somehow exposed to a "glitch" that caused them to realize the fundamental wrongness of being, turned by that experience into eldritch monsters warring to destroy all of creation. Or, rather, a subset of that subset of those who warred against creation: those that stopped. It's interesting so far, though the rules (like Chuubo's and maybe even more so than Nobilis) are very complicated. This time Kendra (who hasn't run one of the games before) is GMing.
Father's Day was last weekend, and Julie took me out for a wonderful dinner at Juliet. They were running a new menu, Cuina Catalana, with a main course of whole fish baked in a salt crust. Was a phenomenal meal, every course was amazing! Really interesting wine, especially the Lagravera Laltre. I noted aloud that it was the first time we'd been there for a big dinner where the two chef-owners were not in the kitchen, apparently taking a well-deserved day off before the opening of their new Beacon Hill restaurant. So it was amusing to see a casually-dressed Josh Lewin drop by later, looking every bit like the anxious parent on their child's first day of college. (And, of course, a pleasure to tell him just how excellent a meal it was.)
This week was the wider Google Flights Team's get-together in the Cambridge office. Was nice to see some of my Zurich colleagues in person.
I think I'm coming out with a winning record in the office MtG tournament for War of the Spark, but not top-8 this time.
This weekend and early next week, we're visiting Julie's parents and attending a memorial for Julie's grandmother.
And Sandy Island is very soon.
