Pre-Thanks
Nov. 22nd, 2020 03:29 pmWhat's new?
I'm still waiting for this election stuff to be over. Or I suppose at this point I should say I'm just waiting for the current administration to be over. No reason to expect that "denial of the election results" will end before the next phases of the nightmare-duck begins. Of course it's nice that the coup the President is continuing to attempt won't work (this time), it still matters that America is now a place where this is the way that governance goes down. It's all pretty embarrassing, even judging by the level of dignity expected from the Trump administration. And it's also legit bad to have the government sabotaging the Presidential transition during a major crisis, presumably as a prelude to sabotaging the entire country during the entire Biden administration. As expected, though.
On the home front, the last Union Square Farmer's Market of the season has come and gone. The weather was beautiful and warm. I picked up some stuff I'd ordered for Thanksgiving, including a heritage turkey. Figure I might as well make the most of it this year, since we're not travelling.
I baked some biscuits today, which turned out well. I'm going to try to prepare some things over the next few days and make the day-of cooking as leisurely as possible.
The pandemic situation looks not so good, and judging by the experience of our sensible neighbors to the north, things might take a turn for the worse after the holiday. This year's a good one to exchange phone calls and letters and side-dishes, there are very good odds there will be a vaccine before next year. There will be many people who really regret having a conventional Thanksgiving in a very unconventional year. I'm thankful to live in a nation that is, I think, still capable of great creativity and resilience.
