I continue to receive sporadic messages from recruiters, but the latest is more interesting than most. Evidently, Ning is looking to hire Olin students. It seems that their recruiter, Brad Fullenbach, was working as a recruiter for Google until recently, so maybe he knows about Olin through Google's recent Olin hires (seems more probable in light of the fact that he found me through LinkedIn, although it may just be that he was keeping an eye on the school for other reasons). The fact that he found me through LinkedIn but contacted me through Facebook is also interesting, I think he's the first recruiter to contact me that way.

Olin College, by consent of the remaining former directors of the Franklin W. Olin Foundation and a majority vote of the College Trustees, has amended the Founding Precepts of Olin College, item six, to reduce the Olin Scholarship by 50% starting for the class of 2014 (entering in Fall 2010).

I would like to say that I totally called the current crisis in my letter to President Miller back in 2004. I wish I had taken a less alarmist tone in that letter, maybe if I had, it wouldn't have been ignored. But let's be honest, it probably would have been ignored anyways.

What really saddens me isn't the abandonment of the founding precepts or the charging of tuition (although that's plenty sad, too). It's the lost opportunity to respond to the crisis with an experimental, innovative, radically creative solution. By responding with a conventional business solution, the administration has dealt a real blow to the Olin ethos, one that will likely remain even if scholarships are eventually restored.

Early Olin was a risk, and the students who signed on reflected that. Now, as the memory of that time begins to fade from the minds of the student body, Olin is in a critical time of transition. But just when leadership was most needed, the administration has wimped out.

Saturday was the alumni association meeting and karaoke at Razzy's, which was fun, with promise of more alumni goodness in the future as the size of the group grows.

Sunday, I went out to Olin for Commencement. Mark (faculty) and Bootles ('09) both had good speeches, although the guest speaker was less impressive. The invocation and benediction were non-denominationally bland (in the "but we all believe in god, right?" sense) but insipid, I would have preferred something interesting, even if it was more explicitly religious. But it was wonderful to see so many of my friends graduate. Olin allows each student to choose a brief message (up to fifteen words) to be read with their name at graduation, there were a lot of clever or entertaining ones, but Gui upstaged everyone by using his fifteen words to propose marriage to his girlfriend, Jenn.

After, hung out with DJ, Ginneh, Mel, and Mark, then went with them plus Andrew to Sunset for dinner.

Can't believe it's been a year.

Olin College is in an interesting predicament due to the recent economic mess. One of Olin's Founding Precepts (a binding agreement, part of the conditional grant from the Olin Foundation) requires giving full-tuition scholarships to all students (at least through 2020). Unfortunately, the endowment which pays for said scholarships has not fared well.

The precepts can be amended with written consent of the three remaining Olin Foundation directors and a majority of the Olin Trustees. The Trustees met recently and made some secret recommendation to the Directors. I'm hoping the Directors hold out on principle, but it doesn't look good.

Today, Olin's commencement events kicked off with an alumni reception and an alumni planning meeting with Olin's new director of business development (the guy who develops the relationships that provide for Olin's financial future). Being back on campus increased my optimism quite a bit, and the meeting even more so. The initial discussion ended up being quite interesting, then Mel (characteristically) suggested we split up into groups and brainstorm. In the brainstorming session, someone noted the need for a better alumni directory to facilitate Olin getting specific information to relevant alumni about ways they could help. I noted I could implement something basic in Google Docs, and the rest of my group said "well, you do that then". So I did. Worst case, it doesn't work (although I do hope people aren't mad at me for sending too many emails to alumni-all).

Was good to see a lot of the other alumni, too. I had an especially nice conversation with Maria, who was kind enough to give me a ride to the T after the meeting.

Looking Up

This weekend was quite good. On Saturday I got out to Wellesley (for Yuki Matsuri, Japanese Club's winter event) and ended up taking a detour to Olin for a party, so saw a lot of friends I haven't seen in a while. I was also glad to see that the new Man Hall continues the Olin tradition of quality parties.

Saturday I went to All Star with Patti for lunch, then in the evening went to Sunset with Nikkie and DJ.

Today I might be meeting someone for tea who I met on OKCupid, but we'll see. She was going to call about timing, but I haven't heard from her yet.

My arm has been fine, too, but I'll have to see how that goes after my next real workout.

I'm graduated, with a diploma and everything. I've moved into my new home. Seeing my family was very nice. I start work at ITA Software tomorrow.

Guess I'm in the real world now.

I'm done with work for the semester! Yeah!

Up surprisingly early this morning. I'm a bit hungry, had a small, early dinner yesterday. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Olin Mel's birthday party is today, on Boston Common. I'm looking forward to it. I'm hoping I'll get to see Sarah before she skips town, too. She's been super-busy with finals.

4 weeks remain. Brandeis is off next week for Passover, and Monday is off for Patriot's Day, so this week should be a bit easier.

The weather has been beautiful, and I spent quite a while today walking around Brookline with Sarah.

Today's seder was good, too. It was my second seder in a row that had an environmental theme. I thought this one was laying it on a little heavy, though. Passover is one of the few Jewish rituals I really enjoy, so I sort of wish my extended family favored a somewhat less liberal version.

School-wise, things progress as usual. Work is ramping up a bit (starting on my final project for Software Systems, designing and programming a Linux shell), but I'm still keeping afloat, more or less.

This Saturday there was the Mexico party at Man Hall, celebrating the end of their recent double-secret probation. It was fun, and quite an amazing crowd showed up (more than the whole student population by a significant number).

Second Candidate's Weekend was fun, too, although I didn't have much time to interact with the candidates. I really enjoyed FWOP's production of Into the Woods, though.

OM-NOM-NOM

All the Korean exchange students from last semester stayed on, and three more arrived (which means Korean exchange students now comprise over 2% of the student body). Two of them had birthdays this weekend, and the others prepared an amazing birthday feast for all.

On a mostly unrelated note, one of my classmates is running Omnom Truffles, a limited-time business currently open for Valentine's Day (open for orders for the next five days). The truffles are reasonably priced, extremely tasty, and come in a wide variety of gourmet flavors. If you're looking for a last-minute Valentine's Day gift, check it out.

Done with my responsibilities for the semester!

Yesterday evening, had a celebration dinner with my SCOPE team at Evoo, an excellent fancy restaurant. My meal was ham slices, poached egg, and some sort of hollandaise sauce stacked on an oatmeal croquet with quince chutney. Basically the fanciest ham and eggs ever, and it was amazingly delicious. Apparently, the place has a $50 eight-course tasting menu, and since I'm staying in Boston I'm sure I'll succumb to that temptation at some point in the future.

Today was pretty relaxing. Expo went well. Tomorrow is moving day. I start work on Wednesday.

The past weekend was awesome. Friday night was dinner at the Chabbad with JOO, then Pogo's birthday party. Saturday night was the Heaven and Hell party at Man Hall, and they really outdid themselves on food and decorations. So I definitely over-indulged my gluttony that weekend...

Less than three weeks to break. Three final papers to finish.

I have housing for break now, I'll be staying in the Olin enclave near Porter Square.

Yesterday was super-eventful.

First, my interview at ITA Software. Three interviews by different engineers, lunch, then a programming problem. I think my interviews went fairly well, and I rocked the programming problem. Had a little difficulty with some of the more theoretical questions about algorithm complexity, though.

Later in the afternoon, I wandered and conversed with Xave and Patti, ate a burrito at Anna's, and headed back to Olin.

In the evening, there was the Halloween dance. As always, the costumes were pretty cool (Carmen Sandiago, Sabriel, Dr. Gonzo, a large cast of characters from FMA, a posse of Spartans...) but I had nothin'. I never want to make a costume for Halloween, but I always feel bad that I didn't...

After that, I went to Psyforia with Pogo, JP, et al. Very fun. The music was great, and in that sort of environment, no one cares how badly you dance.

The weekend was good. The conference was very interesting. I also saw FWOP's production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile, which was quite excellent.

I have a job interview on Friday for ITA Software, a phone interview a week from then for The Open Planning Project, and my information is in to Google, so all is going well on the job search front.

I bought some business-casual clothes, too, so I'm not lacking that anymore. This Friday's interview is casual dress, though.

My first SCOPE design review is tomorrow.

Crazy week, which is making me super tired.

Had a phone interview for ITA Software yesterday, have an interview a week from tomorrow.

The OSA-sponsored Pedal Power Flash Conference starts tomorrow and runs all weekend, so I expect that to take up a lot of my weekend time.

I need to get some business-casual clothes, which I am sorely lacking.

I've broken from my early-rising schedule; still trying to get exercise every day, though. Man Hall is holding 8-Minute Abs every night at 11, so I try to make that when I can, too.

Also, there are ladybugs everywhere.

Overall, this was an eventful week. Jury duty on Tuesday (wasn't selected, fortunately). Career fair on Thursday (yet another step on my quest to get a job (real one, this time)). Seeing my mom and sister Friday and Saturday for family weekend. Sausagefest (Man Hall's October party) this evening. Watching the baseball game at the party (Sox and Tribe tied 6-6, then the Tribe scored 7 runs in the top of the 11th).

I've got a lot of work to finish tomorrow, though.

It's been an odd, downcast week on campus.

That aside, I'm doing all right. I've been extremely busy. I'm feeling a bit better about AHS Capstone since I got my provisional thesis written and made some progress on my project proposal. SCOPE is still frighteningly open-ended.

Yesterday there was a "Campus Day of Service" run by Boston Cares (local volunteer organization). I and a bunch of my fellow Oliners ended up clearing brush at a park near Reservoir station.

The weekend was fairly productive, and I'm still managing to get exercise in every day.
