Various things of note this week:

I saw a tailor about some dress shirts, which should arrive in six to eight weeks. If that does not result in some shirts that are an excellent fit, I will be sorely disappointed. Also placed a small order here and here, and that will also take some weeks before I know exactly how I managed to get the fit completely wrong. It's a process. More expensive ideas have been staved off until if/when the Google deal closes (also if/when I have a better idea of what I'm doing).

My comforter is beginning to fall apart and my sheets are starting to get little holes in them, so I put in an order to replace those with something that is (hopefully) a little more durable. Still haven't bought a bed (a frame for my futon, rather), since I really have no real need for such a thing, but that's still on my to-do list. Also ordered a small space-heater for the coldest part of winter. Wish my room had a radiator.

Started doing 100 Pushups, for kicks.

Looks like Yahoo is going to be shutting down Delicious. That's terrible! I love that service, and no one does quite what they do quite as well. I'd hope that Yahoo would be willing to consider selling it. (And I'd hope that Google would be buying. Google should have acquired the site back in the day. It's a valuable trove of information and the main thing that could improve the site is better search integration.)

The Obama-Republican tax plan passed. At least my representative still has some semblance of honor. Wish I could say the same about my senators.

Nikki will be in town this weekend! DJ and I will be accompanying her to a Christmas party on Saturday. I am excited.

Thanksgiving vacation! Hanging with friends and family, lots of great dinners (Sergio's Sarava, Lola, and, of course, Thanksgiving dinner at home), out on the town practically every night (the usual haunts, plus the Velvet Tango Room, which is classy indeed).

I saw three movies: Unstoppable (the action/disaster movie for train nerds, actually quite fun), Skyline (great special effects, terrible dialog and characterization), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (the other movies were doing an increasingly snappy job of abridging the books, this one reverses that trend; also it really feels like half a movie, since it is).

These weeks are always terrible for getting in exercise, but I did run a mile with Markos (who's training for police academy admissions) and clocked in at about 8.5 in the cold. I dread to look at the scale when I get back, but can't wait to redouble my efforts.

My quest to improve my wardrobe has turned from "this is something I'm working on improving" to a full-time obsession. My latest problems: Getting some warmer stuff for winter, getting casual button shirts that actually fit well, another round of shoe shopping (my formal shoes already don't fit well, my sneakers are getting ready to bite the dust).
l33tminion: (Caffeine)
Things I did the past week: Danced, climbed (some tricky v0s and an easy-ish v1, I need to get back to top-roping at some point), went drinking with DJ, Michelle (a different Michelle, a prospective girlfriend of DJ's), and Jess in various combinations, went hat-shopping, fought off a cold, saw The Social Network with Jess and Film Club (worth seeing, well-acted), conversed with Julia.

Near future: Date with Cidney, figuring out various travel plans.

The past week has been pretty good. Bouldering (still stuck mostly at v0+), dancing (Squares!), crazy-hard endurance circuits. Electric Six concert last Thursday, and have a date this Thursday with Jess, who I met at the concert. Went to the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo on Saturday (local opening band Mighty Tiny also worth a listen), went to Psyforia/FWD Saturday night, enjoyed the late-night walk home. Sunday was epic: Brunch at Neighborhood, hanging with Ames and Owen, watching Catfish with Film Club (highly recommend that movie, though it was highly (intentionally?) mis-advertised).

I ordered all of Scott Pilgrim when it was heavily discounted on Amazon (got the entire series for ~$25 shipped free via subspace highway). Opened that package this morning, am already at the end of Volume 4.

I will be in DC for the rally October 30, plans have been made.

Thursday: Went to a Jim Malcolm concert with Julia.

Saturday: Hanging out with Ames, Owen, and Dante.

Sunday: A date with someone I met online. Was feeling kind of pessimistic going into that, but it was a very pleasant conversation, at the very least. Later in the evening, was up stupidly late playing Shank.

Monday: Bouldering! Climbed a bunch of v0+s and failed at some harder things and ended up very sore indeed.

Today: Ames was over again (taking a week of vacation from Job Corps), the weather is wicked-hot, I am sore and coming down with a cold.

Other things: Working on some hard bugs at work. We get our Letters of Intent from Google tomorrow and the next day, so that's exciting. The Grotto has a new housemate, a graduate student named Saam.

(Unnamed Green) (5.7, passed on first try)
What's My Name? (5.8, climbed)
Temper Tantrum (5.8+, climbed)
l33tminion: (Default)
Friday: Storytelling and sandwiches with Michelle
Saturday: Trainer, house showing, Mario Galaxy 2 all afternoon
Sunday: Brunch with Xave, saw Micmacs (funny!), went to play DDR at Nurit's party (was good to reconnect, last time we met was a while ago)
Monday: Climbing ("Why is + Afraid of 5" (5.8-) climbed (almost passed), "White Ghost" (5.7) passed on first try, "Our House" (5.9-) failed (almost climbed))
Tuesday: Meet with DJ to get paperwork settled
Wednesday: Trainer again (moving to Wednesday because lots of booked weekends coming up), dancing
Thursday: Dinner with Michelle at Picante
Friday: Home to Cleveland for weekend

Plus hitting the gym and some very difficult bugs at work. At least it's not boring!

Fitness Test this weekend, last one was almost a year ago:

Weight: 151.4 lbs. (-18.6 lbs.)
BMI: 24.4 (-3)

Measurements: All measurements down this time: 2 in. around chest, 5.75 waist, 3.3 hips, 1.3 neck, 2.5 shoulders, 2.5 thigh, 1.55 calf, 2.4 arm, 1.85 forearm. Need to add more muscle to those arms still.

Fitness Scores
Overall: 57 → 66
(1-100, 50 is average, higher is better, compared to other males my age)
Bodyfat (3-Pinch Measure): 30 → 33 (19.8% → 18.8%)
Bodyfat (Impedance Measure): 24 → 59 (21.3% → 14.3%)
Resting Heart Rate: 50 (68 BPM) (holding steady)
Active Heart Rate: 60 → 82 (97 BPM → 84 BPM)
60-Second Situps: 73 → 80 (44 reps → 46 reps)
Maximum Pushups: 84 → 78 (37 reps → 34 reps) (need to work on this, still needs work on form)
Sit-Reach Flexion: 75 → 80 (19.5 in. → 20 in.)

Made some progress on cardio this year, but then backslid a bit. Was able to run half an hour on the treadmill at 5.7 MPH, but that's now down to 5.5 or so. Need to get in some real running outside. Maybe a couch-to-5k? Also need to continue with serious strength work. Still, pretty pleased with my progress.

Tough week. Busy at work. Missed work Tuesday and Wednesday because I was struck flat by some sort of virus. Still trying to shake off the last bit of sore throat and cough from that. Hopefully will be able to have a useful workout tomorrow?

Interesting watching the markets crash this week. Seems like everyone's dropping everything to buy gold. Oil is back down close to $70 on decreased expectations for the actually doing things sector of the economy.

Obama's picked a nominee for the Supreme Court, with rather divided reactions. Lawrence Lessig likes her, Brad Hicks is so fed up that he's ready to slap on the Palin '12 bumper sticker and stock up on riot supplies.

MIT Anime Club is closing their events to non-student outsiders and alumni starting next semester, so that's one thing knocked off my schedule.

I've finally bit the bullet and decided to sell my soul to Verizon shell out some cash to replace my current, non-sweet phone with a new, very sweet one. With any luck, my number will be ported without incident and I will encounter only a minor disruption of service. But if I'm not contactable by cell for a few days in the near future, that's why.

In other news, I got back to climbing Monday, this time with the climbing Meetup group, since my previous climbing group has dissolved. Was very challenging, since I hadn't top-roped in forever. I did the following:
Salsa (5.7, passed on first try)
GONE... I'm Back! (5.7, climbed)
Chips (5.8, failed)
Only Juice and Milk Come in 2L Bottles (5.7, climbed (almost passed))
Sun Dried (5.8, climbed)

Last Thursday, got back to bouldering, failed two v1- courses ("All Over the Place" and "We Do Things in Reverse"), but passed a short v2 ("Lizzie-Life").

Yesterday was good, struck up an interesting (if brief) conversation at the cafe, had a good workout, bought new shoes, spent some time with Patti.

Today I was full of restless energy, unable to concentrate on anything.

On a mostly unrelated note, I have a new website to tinker with.

Missed mentioning this last week, but it looks like some of the scenes from an upcoming movie will be at the bar half-a-block from our house.

As for this week:

Exercise: Current lifting routine progresses, ran 30 mins. at 5 mph, went for my annual physical and was 21 lbs. lighter than a year ago.

Anime club on Friday: Saw the first few episodes of Umineko no Naku Koro Ni, which seemed rather bad (way too many of the characters are horribly annoying, idiots, or both).

Saturday evening: Went downtown with Ginneh and DJ, couldn't go bar crawling because Ginneh forgot her ID, got ice cream instead. Came back home, watched Batman Beyond.

Sunday Night Film Club: Saw A Serious Man. A bit like a comedic version of Pi (but not really), very like an extremely Jewish version of The Big Lebowski. Relevant things about it not clear from the previews: It contains a lot of humor that leans on Jewish cultural references, only some of which are explained. The movie itself is the sort of story that drives serious, answer-seeking people (like the protagonist) a bit crazy. It's a Jewish stoner movie.

Went climbing today, did a few bouldering courses:
Monos Are Feet (name?) (v0, passed)
(Unnamed Orange) (v0+, failed)
Sloppy Joe (v0+, failed) (got closer to passing after many attempts, but still not quite)

Unfortunately, I manged to hit my left wrist against something and now have a rather impressive looking bruise. At least it doesn't hurt (yet).
l33tminion: (Conga!)
Friday evening, went to the Border Cafe with Rujing and her roommate, JC.

Saturday, finished this round of my workouts. Hooray! Have one week to take it relatively easy, then the next phase of my routine starts.

Saturday evening, went pub crawling with DJ in the evening. Was going to go to Octoberfest at the Harpoon Brewery, but due to some confusion about the schedule, we got there too late to enter. Went to Grendel's Den and Bukowski instead. Drank some good beer, and learned the name of my favorite bartender. The only downside was we were up late, so I skipped climbing again this morning... I haven't been climbing for a few weeks now (keep missing the usual times due to a bunch of unrelated reasons). I really need to get back to that this week.

Today, Tegan and Patti were over moving some of Patti's stuff, so I was able to chat with them for a bit. I'm going to a Paper Raincoat concert later in the evening.

Today, had a good hard workout. I felt fine after, but later in the day my back suddenly became very sore. It's a bit better now, but I'm still skipping climbing tomorrow.

A package containing delicious honey-cake arrived from my mom just in time for Rosh Hashana and was enjoyed by myself and housemates.

In the evening, I went to see 9 (film based on this short film) with Ames. The movie was awesome, very in line with the feel of the short film. So if you like the short film, consider seeing the full feature.

After, I didn't feel like spending time alone, so I went to the Central Square Tavern, drank some interesting beer, and despite being probably the most awkward and least fashionable guy in the place, was still invited to join in some pleasant conversations. So it's been a very good weekend so far.

Climbing for today:
Jump 'n' Party (v1, failed; way above my level, but worked on technique)
SECAM (v0, failed)
Cold Pillows (5.7, climbed; still long, and I made a lot of mistakes)
Green Tree Frog (5.7, passed on first try)
Torpedo! (5.7, failed)
Blackfoot's Revenge (5.8, failed; out of enegy)
l33tminion: (Why Me?)
Saturday, got a new exercise routine at FT, then spent some time with Ames. Also started playing Persona 4, which is a nifty game once you get past the slow start (and addictive, which has meant quite a few late nights for me since).

Went to the healthcare reform rally on Monday and marched with SEIU and others. After, rewatched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time with Xave.

Yesterday, wrapped up one of my major bugs at work.

Today, life is a drag. I'm trying to figure out a new bug at work but still in the high confusion stage.

Now, taking a break and going to the gym before I get hungry for dinner.

On an unrelated note, have a comic:
l33tminion: Nana nananananana na na harder better faster stronger (Exercise)
Climbing results from yesterday, before I forget:
Cold Pillows (5.7+, climbed (this one is long, there's no part I can't do, but I ran out of strength))
Blackfoot's Revenge (5.8, climbed (almost passed, but slipped almost at the end))
Torpedo! (5.7, failed (almost, but couldn't do the very last bit))
l33tminion: Nana nananananana na na harder better faster stronger (Exercise)
Climbing for today:
Send City (5.8 (+?), failed twice)
Blackfoot's Revenge (5.8, climbed barely)
Chocolate Cake (5.7, climbed (almost passed))
l33tminion: Nana nananananana na na harder better faster stronger (Exercise)
